First time ….
I am so happy today…. probably because of the upcoming BIG day… actually not that big lar… but just giving me an excuse to indulge into things which i like most hihi:) well… i had a chance to assist a lecturer in operation theater this morning.. it is no big deal.. but this is really my first time to do this…
Firstly, you need to scrub ur hands meticulously to ensure that not even single dirt can be seen. Secondly, you need to wear the surgical gown sterilely by having assistant in helping you to tie the gown coz once you are in it you cannot touch anything even your skin, glasses, hair {so you need to endure not to touch anything even that irritating itchy sensation of ur scalp :)}… and when you are wearing the surgical gloves, you need to be aware not to touch the glove using ur barehand at all thus u need to use the surgical gown to cover your hand to hold the glove when u want to slip the fingers into the glove.. by the time you are fully dressed up.. you are FORBIDDEN to touch anything except anything in green (aka the sterile cloth which you use to cover the patient, that is the colour we use in our hospital) and the surgical instruments… the extraordinary thing is there were nurses assisting u to wear the gown and gloves (as you know i am still a STUDENT so i dont have the privilege of having nurses assisting me :P) ..ooowww it feels so good… i feel like i am a surgeon
well… there were three dental surgery cases in the operation theater.. i managed to assist the last case… doing restoration (aka filling) and extraction on a down syndrome patient under general anesthesia (aka put into sleep) the funny things is, probably this is my first assisting, i was really enthusiastic about the surgery so i tend to look very near to the patient and almost hit my lecturer’s head during the procedure haha :).. i was helping my lecturer to suck the saliva and blood out of the patient mouth using suction device, retract the lip or tongue that blocks the view and help to compress the gingiva (aka gum) to stop the bleeding as well as placing the restorative material .. it is just like a normal dental procedure with differences such as u have to stand throughout the surgery (you can sit on the operating chair while u are treating the patient in clinic) and the patient is unconscious… it was fun.. i enjoyed it very much.. hope can have the opportunity to assist again in the future.. preferably more complicated case like jaw fracture…
Received some messages today.. glad to hear some news from my old friends.. i am really thankful that they are still remembering me although i have been ‘disappeared’ in penang for quite sometime.. dedicated to all my friends.. may our friendships will be something which we keep forever, no matter where you are.. i will always remember you
p/s: to my best friend SiewSiew, Happy Birthday !!!! May all your dreams come true
luv and kisses,
Lennie
